Oak Mountain Kitchen Makeover
This home in the Oak Mountain area of Birmingham, AL was built in 1978, and it had not been updated since! I am partial to 70's homes because I love the typical one level layout, the large rooms, the "extra" formal living room (that no one ever used), and the quality of construction. I believe that after that decade, construction quality took a dive. There are exceptions, but from my experience a vast majority of homes built after that aren't built to last.
The budget was tight on this one so we stuck to the basics. Paint and flooring, lighting, hardware, countertops, backsplash, and appliances. We opened up the cased opening leading into the formal dining room by doubling it. We also took out the upper cabinets above the stove and added a bar top into the living room. You'll see there was a multitude of cabinets and a pantry (another bonus of these 70's homes) so we were ok taking out a few. Plus, it freed up a cabinet door to be used in place of the trash compactor. I love turning those into hidden trash drawers when possible.
My favorites right now:
Paint Colors - Benjamin Moore Ballet White with Soft Chamois trim. The cabinets are Swiss Coffee.
Granite - Fantasy Brown (Alabama Kitchen & Bath)
Hardware - Contemporary with satin brass finish (Brandino Brass)
Decor - Wayfair, Home Goods, World Market, Inline Lighting
